Words with Friends March 10, 2026

Karen Yvonne Hamilton, 2026

Who we are

Our small group of friends meets once a week to do short writes about random topics. This is not a critique group. It is a safe and comfortable place to hang out with other people who like to write and support one another. We mostly use random words to prompt our writing, hence Words with Friends (not to be confused with the online Scrabble type game).

We generally get through three prompts during our 1-hour meeting. Occasionally we do a slightly longer prompt but never more than 10 minutes. This allows us to get through three prompts per meeting with time to read our pieces to the group. Participants are encouraged to expand their writings on their own time or use them as a future prompt.

The best part about our writing group? The fellowship and the laughter!

This Week’s Prompts

Whether you are with a friend(s) or not, I hope you enjoy this week’s writing prompts. We used a 5-minute timer for each, but feel free to set the clock to whatever you like or use no timer at all. Happy writing!

Prompt #1: Daylight Savings Time

  • We switched to Daylight Savings Time this past weekend. What are your thoughts on DST?

Prompt #2: Random prompt on Nature

  • Think about the weather. Do you prefer sunny skies or stormy days? Or perhaps you prefer snow falling and frost covering everything. What sort of weather do you like the best and why?
  • When you take a walk through nature, what do you like the most about it? What do you like the least?
  • If you had to choose your favorite type of nature, which would you choose? A deserted island? A cabin nestled in the woods? A seaside bungalow? What about the nature surrounding that place speaks to you?
  • What is your favorite season of the year? Why?

Prompt #3: Random Word

  • Each person writes two words of their choosing on a blank piece of paper, folds the papers, and puts them in the box. Then, each person chooses a word to write on for 5-minutes.
